Monoclonal antibodies (MABs), one of the most significant classes of new drugs to emerge from the biotech industry, were invented in the UK.

MABs are very attractive drugs, offering effective and efficacious treatments that are often superior to small molecule drugs.
Monoclonal antibodies are designed to demonstrate efficacy with low toxicity and are expected to reduce overall treatment and hospitalization costs associated with the side effects and opportunistic infections, which can result from chemotherapy or radiation therapy

Unlike chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which act in a less specific way, the aim of monoclonal antibody treatment is to destroy cancerous cells in a targeted way and to leave other types of cells unharmed.

1. In-vitro process (tissue culture)
The simplest method for producing the monoclonal antibodies in-vitro is to grow the hybridoma cultures in batches and purify it from the tissue culture medium

2. In-vivo process

  • Immunisation of mice for generating hybridoma cells.
  • Screening of mouse for antibody production.
  • Preparation of myeloma cells.
  • Fusion of mylemocells with immune spleen cells.
  • Cloning of hybridoma cell.

In-vitro, that is, in culture vessels. The yield runs from 10-60g/mL. In-vivo; ie, growing in mice. Here, the antibody concentration in the serum and other body fluids can reach 1-10 mg/mL.

Before production of antibodies by either method, hybrid cells that will produce the antibodies are generated.
